Stanford's Center for Probing the Nanoscale (CPN) offers an annual one-week Summer Institute for Middle School Teachers (SIMST). Participating teachers learn about nanotechnology research and the underlying physical concepts that apply to the science classes they teach. Daily sessions focus on inquiry-based modules providing teachers with materials that explicitly address California’s 8th grade physical science content standards, as well as parallel national standards.
Participating teachers receive stipends and Continuing Studies Credits to meet their professional development requirements. In addition, alumni of the program have continued relations with the CPN, including access to the CPN demonstration lending-library (e.g.large-scale models of nanoprobes such as a magnetic force microscope).
